Rachel Newbold

Cello

Rachel took up the cello at age seven and hasn’t stopped playing since. At a young age she won the Peter Lambourne Youth Bursary prize for solo performance in North Hertfordshire. She completed her undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Gillian Thoday. She then completed her postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tutelage of Ursula Smith, and is now based in Manchester.

As a professional musician, recent projects she has participated in include ‘The Nico Project’ as part of Manchester International Festival, with actor Maxine Peake, and ‘Collaborations’ at contemporary dance venue The Place in London. While studying, Rachel enjoyed playing as part of the Jura Piano Trio, performing in concerts across the North West.

Rachel now works to promote musical engagement in Early Years settings, introducing classical music to children under the age of five. This has seen her participate in engagement schemes at Manchester Museum and various local nurseries. She also teaches extensively.

A keen chamber musician, Rachel can’t wait to get stuck into some playing with the Fresco musicians!
